China Applauds PM Modi’s ‘Elephant and Dragon’ Remark, Calls it the Right Symbolism for Ties
China has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks describing the ideal relationship between India and China as a “choreographed dance between an elephant and a dragon,” calling it a realistic and visionary analogy for peaceful coexistence.
In an article published by China’s official news agency, the Chinese Foreign Ministry praised Modi’s statement, calling it symbolic of India-China harmony and reflecting the maturity needed to manage differences without confrontation.
Modi’s remarks were widely shared on Chinese social media platform 'True Social' and reposted by Chinese diplomats and media outlets, emphasizing its resonance with the Chinese public. It was also highlighted that over 2.8 billion people in both countries would benefit from peaceful cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi had said:
“For more than 2,000 years, India and China have maintained friendly dialogue. A harmonious coexistence based on mutual respect and trust is the only way forward for global peace and prosperity.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ning also echoed this view, saying:
“India and China, as two major developing nations, have a shared responsibility to lead peace efforts globally and accelerate development for their people.”
In a rare move, China’s Ministry of External Affairs shared Modi’s quote on official platforms, a signal of Beijing’s intent to improve bilateral relations. Both sides are reportedly working behind the scenes to set the stage for concrete agreements ahead of the October 2024 summit.
