Prestigious Literary and Cultural Honours Celebrate Excellence in Arts and Letters

In a major recognition of artistic and literary contribution, two prominent announcements have brought the spotlight back to the country’s vibrant cultural and intellectual landscape. While the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi has declared a large set of awards for distinguished artists across multiple disciplines, the literary world is also celebrating the selection of noted writer Mamata Kalia for the Sahitya Akademi Award for her memoir-based work Jiti Ji Allahabad.

Together, these recognitions underscore the enduring value of literature, music, theatre, and the performing arts in preserving cultural identity and enriching public discourse.

UP Sangeet Natak Akademi Announces Awards for Four Years

After a long interval of nearly four years, the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced its long-awaited list of awardees. A total of 53 artists are set to be honoured. Out of these, 45 artists will receive the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, while four artists each will be honoured with the Safdar Hashmi Award and the Begum Akhtar Award.

The date for the formal award distribution ceremony is yet to be announced.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Akademi in the presence of Akademi Chairman Prof. Jayant Khot, Vice Chairperson Vibha Singh, and Director Dr. Shobhit Nahar. They stated that the awards cover a broad range of creative fields and recognise contributions from artists associated with classical vocal music, light music, folk music, dance, instrumental music, theatre, art criticism, writing, cultural development, and acting.

According to the Akademi, the awards have been declared for the years 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. For each of these years, 11 artists have been selected for the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, while one artist each has been selected for the Safdar Hashmi Award and the Begum Akhtar Award.

One of the notable aspects of the 2024 list is the selection of Ritesh and Rajneesh Mishra of New Delhi, who are brothers, for the joint award in the category of classical singing. Their selection has drawn attention as an example of collaborative excellence in Indian classical music.

The Akademi’s announcement reflects an effort to bridge the recognition gap caused by the delay of previous years and to ensure that deserving artists from diverse streams of performing arts and cultural contribution receive institutional acknowledgment.

Mamata Kalia to Receive Sahitya Akademi Award

In another significant development in the world of arts and letters, noted writer Mamata Kalia, currently a resident of Crossing Republic, has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award. She is set to receive the honour on 31 March for her memoir-based literary work Jiti Ji Allahabad.

The recognition marks a remarkable milestone in a literary journey that began in her teenage years. Mamata Kalia has shared that she began writing around the age of 15, during a Diwali special issue of a newspaper. At that time, she had little idea that her literary pursuit would one day bring her such national recognition. For one of her earliest stories, she received an honorarium of ₹10, which, as she has recalled, was considered a meaningful amount at the time.

Born on 2 November 1940 in Vrindavan, Mamata Kalia began her literary journey early in life and went on to become one of Hindi literature’s respected and distinctive voices. Her award-winning work Jiti Ji Allahabad was first published in 2021, during the Covid period, and has since seen multiple editions. The second edition reportedly came out within 28 days, and by now the book has reached four editions, reflecting its popularity and literary appeal.

A Memoir That Revives the Cultural Soul of Allahabad

What makes Jiti Ji Allahabad especially significant is that it does not merely describe a city in a conventional way. Instead, the book recreates the cultural, literary, and intellectual life of Allahabad through lived memory and emotional depth. It brings alive an era shaped by universities, coffee houses, literary gatherings, and a unique atmosphere of writers, thinkers, and friends.

The memoir draws from the author’s personal experiences, encounters, and reminiscences, making it both intimate and historically rich. Through this work, Mamata Kalia presents a portrait not only of a place but of a literary culture that helped shape modern Hindi thought and writing.

A Rich Literary Career Across Genres

Mamata Kalia’s contribution to literature extends far beyond a single work. She has also served as the editor of the English journal ‘Hindi’ at the Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, adding to her stature as both a writer and literary intellectual.

Her published works include novels, story collections, memoirs, essays, and poetry, reflecting a wide thematic and stylistic range. Among her notable novels are Beghar, Narak Dar Narak, Daud, Dukham Sukhham, Sapnon Ki Home Delivery, Kalchar-Vulture, and SachchaJhooth.

Her short story collections include works such as Chhutkara, UskaYauvan, Seat No. Chhah, Nirmohi, Pratidin, Thoda Sa Pragatisheel, Ek Adad Aurat, Bolne Wali Aurat, Pachchis Saal Ki Ladki, Khushkismat, and Pratinidhi Kahaniyan.

She has also written poetry collections and one-act plays, including Aap Na Badlenge, while her other memoir and reflective prose works include Kal Parchon Ki Sair, Safar ke Ham Safar, KitneShahron Mein Kitni Baar, Andaz-e-Bayan, and writings on women’s issues and feminist discourse, such as Bhavishya Ka Stree Vimarsh, Stree Vimarsh Ka Yatharth, and Stree Vimarsh Ke Tevar.

Recipient of Several Literary Honours

Over the years, Mamata Kalia has received several notable honours for her literary contribution. Apart from the Sahitya Akademi recognition, she has been honoured with distinctions such as the Yashpal Smriti Samman, Mahadevi Smriti Puraskar, Ram Manohar Lohia Samman, Savitribai Phule Smriti Samman, and the Lamhi Samman, among others.

Her recognition by the Sahitya Akademi therefore stands not only as an award for one book, but also as a tribute to a sustained and influential literary career spanning decades.

Recognition Across Creative Disciplines

Viewed together, the announcements by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Sahitya Akademi represent a wider cultural affirmation. They celebrate excellence across literature, music, theatre, and the performing arts, and reinforce the importance of institutional recognition in encouraging artistic commitment and preserving India’s creative heritage.

At a time when cultural and literary spaces are rapidly evolving, such honours serve as an important reminder that enduring work—whether in the form of a memoir, a musical tradition, a theatrical performance, or a life devoted to the arts—continues to hold immense value.

These recognitions not only honour individual achievement but also strengthen the collective cultural memory of society by ensuring that the contributions of writers and artists are acknowledged, remembered, and passed on to future generations.
