‘Rain Warriors’ Sought to Revive Parks and Green Belts in Greater Noida
In response to increasing complaints about drying grass and trees in city parks and green belts, the Greater Noida Authority has launched a campaign calling for the support of ‘Rain Warriors’—individuals and organizations dedicated to scientific and sustainable water conservation.
Under this initiative, the Authority is inviting environmental experts, NGOs, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and professionals in landscaping, water resource management, and sustainability to contribute ideas and implement rainwater harvesting systems in green areas across the city.
According to Abhishek Pathak, OSD (Horticulture), the objective is to:
- Evaluate existing landscaping and irrigation methods
- Design customized rainwater harvesting structures
- Integrate solutions with green maintenance practices
- Recommend actionable strategies for long-term sustainability
The plan emphasizes capturing rainwater from rooftops, paved areas, and open spaces to recharge groundwater instead of allowing valuable water to drain away. This eco-friendly approach is expected to:
- Alleviate the pressure on municipal water supply
- Boost soil moisture and reduce erosion
- Promote urban greenery, especially during dry spells
Urgency Behind the Move
Groundwater levels in Greater Noida have drastically dropped from 19.9 meters in 2018 to 36.3 meters in 2024. Authorities warn that if corrective action is not taken, the city could face severe water stress in the near future.
Experts believe integrating rainwater harvesting in urban planning is not just a sustainable move, but a necessity for ecological and civic resilience.
Interested individuals and institutions with relevant experience can apply to join this green initiative and help turn Greater Noida into a model for water-secure urban planning.
