Rare 1945 Wine Bottle Sold for ₹7.5 Crore at Auction

A bottle of vintage wine dating back to 1945 has set a remarkable record after being sold at an auction in the United States for approximately $812,500 (around ₹7.5 crore), making it one of the most expensive wine bottles ever purchased.

The wine, identified as a Romanee-Conti vintage from 1945, is considered exceptionally rare and highly prized among collectors and connoisseurs. Its extraordinary value is attributed not only to its age but also to the unique historical circumstances surrounding its production.

Experts note that the 1945 harvest holds special significance, as it marked the final year before vineyards were heavily impacted by the phylloxera epidemic, a devastating pest infestation that destroyed a large number of grapevines across Europe. Following this outbreak, many old vines were uprooted, making wines from this period extremely scarce.

Only a **limited quantity—approximately 750 millilitres per bottle—**was produced from the grapes harvested during that year, further enhancing its exclusivity. The rarity of the vintage, combined with its historical importance, has elevated its status to that of a collector’s masterpiece.

Wine specialists also believe that the grapes used before the widespread impact of phylloxera were cultivated in deep, mineral-rich soil, which contributed to the wine’s exceptional flavor, complexity, and aging potential. This has led many experts to regard such vintages as possessing a distinct character that is difficult to replicate in modern wine production.

The auction result highlights the growing global demand for rare and historic wines, where collectors are willing to pay premium prices for bottles that represent both heritage and craftsmanship. This sale further reinforces the reputation of vintage wines as not just beverages, but valuable artifacts of agricultural history and refined taste.
