Sedentary Lifestyle Driving Surge in Obesity, Survey Reveals
A recent survey has highlighted a sharp rise in obesity levels across India, attributing the trend largely to increasingly sedentary lifestyles and lack of physical activity. The findings indicate that lifestyle-related factors are playing a dominant role in the growing prevalence of weight-related health issues.
According to the survey conducted by LocalCircles, a significant majority of respondents acknowledged that reduced physical movement and unhealthy habits are contributing to weight gain. Nearly 76 percent of participants reported having family members, friends, or relatives who are overweight or obese. The results point to obesity emerging as a widespread public health concern rather than an isolated issue.
When asked about the extent of the problem, 12 percent of respondents said that 10 or more people in their social circle are affected by obesity. Around 10 percent reported that seven to nine individuals are overweight, while 20 percent indicated four to six people. About 34 percent said one to three individuals are affected, and 22 percent stated they did not know anyone with obesity.
The survey also examined the health impact of obesity. Nineteen percent of respondents said they personally know one or more individuals suffering from obesity-related health complications. Thirty-seven percent indicated that at least one person in their circle is battling serious diseases linked to excess weight, while another 37 percent reported that no major illnesses have yet been observed despite obesity.
In identifying the causes behind rising obesity rates, 64 percent attributed it to a sedentary lifestyle. An equal proportion pointed to insufficient exercise as a major factor. Additionally, 68 percent cited unhealthy eating habits, including consumption of junk food and processed items, as a key contributor. Twenty-seven percent linked obesity to genetic factors, while 4 percent associated it with alcohol consumption.
Health experts warn that obesity significantly increases the risk of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, and joint problems. The survey findings underscore the need for greater awareness about balanced diets, regular exercise, and proactive health monitoring.
As urbanization and technology-driven routines continue to limit physical activity, medical professionals emphasize that preventive lifestyle changes are essential to curb the growing obesity epidemic. The survey reinforces the importance of adopting healthier habits to reduce long-term health risks and improve overall well-being.
