Now West Bengal’s Digha Also Has a Jagannath Dham
West Bengal now has its very own Jagannath Dham. On Thursday, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated a newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha, located in the Purba Medinipur district. The CM described it as a “spiritual and cultural gift” to the state. Inspired by the architecture of Puri’s world-famous Jagannath Temple, this temple has been envisioned as a major spiritual tourism destination.
To make the temple accessible to devotees from across the state, arrangements for Jagannath Rath Yatra from different parts of West Bengal are being planned.
Cultural Performances and Temple Features:
During the grand inauguration ceremony, the Odissi dance troupe Dona Ganguly Dance Team performed a magnificent dance, adding spiritual charm to the event. The temple has been adorned with beautiful stone carvings and sculptural architecture, designed to resemble the Puri shrine closely.
BJP Leader Dilip Ghosh Also Visited:
Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and his wife visited the temple prior to its inauguration. While political leaders from various parties are visiting the temple, the event remained a state-organized religious occasion.
Public Devotion and Promotion:
The West Bengal Tourism Department will promote the Digha Jagannath Dham as a tourism hotspot, aiming to attract not only pilgrims but also cultural enthusiasts. A proposal has been made to broadcast daily rituals from the temple live into homes via TV.
