Vinesh Phogat’s Wrestling Comeback Marred by Controversy, Legal Battles and Selection Trial Heartbreak
Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat returned to competitive wrestling with the aim of securing a place in India's squad for the 2026 Asian Games. However, her comeback became the centre of a prolonged dispute involving the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), legal interventions, and intense competition on the mat.
The celebrated wrestler's return came after months away from competitive action and followed a series of disagreements regarding her eligibility and participation in the Asian Games selection trials. The Wrestling Federation of India initially restricted her participation to a different weight category, leading to legal proceedings and widespread debate within the wrestling community. Eventually, court intervention paved the way for her participation in the women's 53kg selection trials.
Competing at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi Stadium, Phogat began her campaign strongly, registering victories in her opening bouts and advancing to the semifinals. Her run, however, ended with a closely contested 6-4 defeat against Asian bronze medallist Meenakshi Goyat in the women's 53kg category. The loss effectively ended her hopes of representing India at the 2026 Asian Games.
Despite the disappointment, Phogat maintained that the result did not define her career. Speaking after the defeat, she expressed determination to continue competing and vowed to return stronger. She also criticised the Wrestling Federation of India, alleging that she had been forced to battle institutional resistance throughout her comeback attempt.
The controversy surrounding her return extended beyond the wrestling mat. The WFI challenged court orders that allowed her participation in the trials, arguing that sporting federations should retain authority over selection processes. The matter reached the courts, where broader questions were raised regarding the extent of judicial intervention in sports administration and athlete selection.
The episode highlighted the continuing tensions within Indian wrestling following years of administrative disputes, governance challenges, and conflicts between athletes and officials. For many observers, Phogat's comeback attempt became symbolic of the larger struggle between athletes seeking opportunities and sporting bodies seeking to enforce regulations and selection policies.
Widely regarded as one of India's most accomplished wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat's achievements include an Asian Games gold medal, multiple Commonwealth Games gold medals, and World Championship medals. Her contributions have helped transform women's wrestling in India and inspired a new generation of athletes.
Although her bid to qualify for the 2026 Asian Games ended in disappointment, Phogat's determination to continue competing suggests that her wrestling journey is far from over. Her comeback attempt demonstrated both the challenges elite athletes face beyond competition and the resilience that has defined her career for more than a decade.
